This season, southern VT and western MA will host three rando races, with many of the prizes reserved for those who participate in all three races.
Detailed information is available at:
http://www.facebook.com/pages/NE-Rando-Race-Series/137097509664838
... but in brief, all races are on Sunday, with registration at 9:00, pre-race briefing (mandatory!) at 9:30, followed by a short traverse to the start, then race begins at 10:00, followed by awards at 1:00.
Entry fees vary (Berkshire East includes a lift ticket, while Magic and Bromley entry fee can be credited toward an afternoon lift-ticket), although all are free for season pass holders. Click on the "Events" tabs for the detailed course layouts (though subject to change on day of course).
I'll post some updates in this thread (and at other forums), but the best way to stay in the loop (as well as help me to anticipate the number of possible attendees) is to become a "fan" of the Facebook page and (more importantly) RSVP for each individual event. Both registration and payment though are the morning of each race, so no commitments.
For details on the other NE races outside the series, visit:

... but in brief, Jay is Jan 14, MRV Feb 5, Saddleback Feb 11, and Bretton Woods Mar 25 (after a several-year absence). _________________ My Dynafits are powered by GU.

Jay Peak rando race is this coming weekend, Saturday January 14. Registration, start, and finish are all at the nordic center (i.e., golf clubhouse), a bit of a walk from the tramway base (but has its own parking lot). Fee is $10, pre-race briefing at 9:30, start at 10:00.
(And perfect weekend for it too: still won't be quite enough snow for really good backcountry skiing, but the weather forecast will bring out all the crowds for lift-served skiing, plus going to be mighty chilly on those sofas suspending in the air, so stay warm by skinning!) _________________ My Dynafits are powered by GU.

Skin track is looking great for the Berkshire East race this coming Sunday! I played pick-up-sticks yet again this morning (gusty winds!), and moved a little bit of snow onto some thin spots, but the rain and refreeze actually helped the skin track by making the snowpack more dense and also solidifying all the loose snow I shoveled previously. The skin track is really glazed over right now (super slippery!), but the weather forecast shows some snow between now and Sunday, so for the race we should have nice-gliding fresh snow on top of the firm old tracks - perfect!
Looks like we’re pretty guaranteed to at least have a reasonably challenging descent on Flying Cloud. (Currently huge whales, waiting to be groomed out.) Possible that Liftline might reopen for a *very* challenging descent. Details might not be determined until the morning of the race.
We might also have a mandatory bootpack extra mini-lap for the full course. I talked with the owner this morning, but he was running late, so we’re going to meet again Friday morning to go over some possible routes.
Bottomline is that if you’re planning to do the full three-lap course, then start thinking about bringing a backpack to which you can lash your skis (mandatory!), and save up the energy for another ~500 ascent/descent on top of the full course for prior years.

Important Berkshire East update (besides the perfect skin track conditions and perfect weather forecast):
A back pack -- to which you can lash your skis -- is required for participants in the full course, since we now have a mini-loop boot pack at the end. Course description handouts will be provided at the pre-race briefing.
1. Deskin in the same place as after the first two laps, but then ski slightly to the right to descend Big Chief.
2. About halfway down Big Chief, you will probably see a SLOW sign, where you can start to fork left. Stay high, and you can traverse across the closed Jug trail that is merging in from above, to your left (as you ski down). On the far side of Jug, you should see a boot track. Remove your skis, lash them to your pack (required!), and hike up Jug, staying with the established boot track on the climber’s right (as opposed to putting in even more boot tracks all over the trail).
3. At the top of Jug, you will join the Mountain Top Triple, where you can click back into your skis and descend Flying Cloud.
4. Finish is in front of the lodge, at my red backpack, as will be shown before the race. _________________ My Dynafits are powered by GU.

Thanks everyone for a great race! We had perfect conditions for the skintrack, and the new boot pack was a fun challenge for those who elected the three-and-a-half lap full course option. Jerimy won his second race of the season (after Jay Peak the prior weekend), leading all the way into the third skin lap until Josh passed him (with me close enough to keep them in sight most of the time and delude myself into thinking I could close the gap). But on the boot pack Josh hadn't realized that the ski carry loop on his new race pack needed to be tightened up, so some slipping skis allowed Jerimy to retake the lead by about 10 seconds (with me something like 30 seconds behind). Bob was first among those without any race gear, Dmitriy was first among those who lacked Dynafit/"Tech" bindings, Stanislav was first among telemarkers, and Rachel first among women. (And apologies to anyone whose name I bungled!)

Those few inches of snow Friday night saved the MRV rando race on Sunday. Although the Lower Antelope ascent at MRG was removed from the course, without that fresh snow, those occasional glare ice sections on the Long Trail might have been so prevalent as to cancel the entire race.
After standing around confused in the finish for a couple minutes wondering where Jan was, I looked up to see a near three-way tie for 2nd, with Jerimy about a ski length ahead of Lincoln who was about a ski length ahead of Josh. A little while later Jan came through, as he had missed the right-hand exit from Lower FIS onto Slidebrook, helpfully marked with a prominent "Closed" rope (and apparently no course marshal when he reached the junction).
And if anyone is at the Lincoln Peak Valley House lodge, could you go upstairs and take a picture of the results if they're posted on the inside of the door? (Sugarbush isn't responding to requests from either or MRG to pass them along...) _________________ My Dynafits are powered by GU.

Last night was rain, but tonight is snow, and then Sunday morning for the Magic race is nice warm sunny weather. The exact course layout is still to-be-determined, but remember that if we have a bootpack for the final third lap, then to do the full course (instead of the shortened two-lap course), you'll need a pack that can carry your skis.

Based on Jerimy's scouting tour this afternoon, here is the anticipated race course for tomorrow:
(And remember to turn your clocks ahead by an hour tonight!)
1. “Le Mans” start at entrance to Lower Magic Carpet, then skin up periphery of ski area east side (in pale blue highlighter). Generally go left at intersections, except veer slightly to your right at base of Vertigo (which is quite steep and has a tree island), stay on the main route when White Out veers up steeply to your left, then branch off to your left on the narrow Betwixt (with the Red chair probably already in view straight ahead).
2. Deskin near unloading area of Red Chair. Ski (in yellow/green highlighter) to the skier’s left down Upper Wizard, then branch off on Talisman, and eventually rejoin Lower Wizard. Skate across the base area to reskin at the start. Repeat all of the above for a second lap.
3. For those electing a 3rd lap, after completing 2nd lap, skin (in solid orange) up Show Off, then left at Wand, and start skinning up Twilight Zone.
4. After a short distance, Twilight Zone will go from flat to steep. Put your skis on your pack and look for the established boot track (dotted orange).
5. At the closure rope , rejoin prior ascent route to skin across Upper Magic Carpet to Betwixt, then repeat prior descent. _________________ My Dynafits are powered by GU.

Bromley course map for this coming Sunday:
[And note that all ascents are 100% skinning, so no boot pack this time, unlike Berkshire East and Magic.]
1. Ascend Plaza on your right, then just before the lift top terminal, at tower #11, look for the cut-through on your right to Upper Thruway. For the remainder of the ascent (in red), stay to your left (forking left numerous times), continuing on Run Around #1 to summit.
2. At the broad open summit area, deskin near the unloading area for Sun Mtn Express quad. Ski to your left toward the unadorned bullwheel for Blue Ribbon fixed-grip quad. (At the sign, choose Blue Ribbon Quad to left, *NOT* West Side to right.) Descent route to be announced at the pre-race briefing (and might vary by lap).
3. At the bottom of the descent, ski to your left of the chair base, i.e., so that the chair base is to your right as you ski down. Loop around the chair base, then reskin wherever you want to, although be careful and courteous toward other skier traffic. Look up to your left. The very broad and prominent slope is Yodeler (much more obvious than conveyed on the map): skin up on your right (in orange). At Yodeler’s top, traverse across a very broad open intersection to skin up underneath Sun Mtn Express quad. You’ll mainly stay underneath the returning chairs, but sometimes you’ll need to stray slightly to your left underneath the ascending chairs.
4. At tower #16, stay to your right, reaching a broad open intersection with very little snow. Deskin here, with the chair summit terminal in sight, and traverse over toward Blue Ribbon fixed-grip quad, picking up whichever of the three possible descent routes (with the pink “?” on the map) has been designated at the pre-race briefing.
5. Repeat the ascent in #3. If in the Shortened Course, skip this ascent and proceed to #7 below.
6. Repeat the descent in #4 (unless a different route has been designated for the final lap).
7. Reskin at the base of Blue Ribbon Quad as previously, then skin up Yodeler, but after that . . .
8. At Yodeler’s top, instead of continuing to skin up across to Sun Mtn Express quad, deskin and look down to your left at a massive tower for a zipline with to the right a small wooden race start shack. Ski down (in green) between these two structures to ski Upper East Meadow, then take a slight right onto Lower East Meadow. If a race course is up, then just ski around it. Note that the base area is a Slow Skiing Area, so ski at the general pace of other traffic, and don't pass any of your fellow competitors once you encounter the Slow signs. _________________ My Dynafits are powered by GU.
