Airbags, Avalungs, Beacons, Cords (remember them?) There are no magic bullet's when caught in an avalanche. They all increase your chances of survival to various extents, but they all have their flaws and cost. Not getting caught in the first place? to be redundant, Priceless. I believe that evaluating the risk on EVERY RUN you take is the best tool you can use to stay alive. BTW I'm guilty of not using that tool on every run, though I think I'm getting better at it. _________________ It's not about the turn, but rather was it earned? |

Scroll down to the seventh-to-last paragraph. Seem like bs to anyone else? |
You mean the 'reportedly dug his friend out with his own hands'?
In British English that could be intended to mean that he did it himself, as opposed to someone else doing it. Wasn't necessarily intended to mean he did it with bare hands as opposed to with his hands on a shovel. _________________ Nick (AT)

No, I'm referring to their consideration of charging the survivor with grevious bodily harm. |

Ah - perhaps they have edited the story as that is now in the fourth to last paragraph. _________________ Nick (AT)

Effective as Talisman? Not by those sober results.

I'm pretty sure he wasn't wearing an airbag, though his partner (who survived the slide) was. Not to suggest that an airbag is a panacea, of course. |

To be clear, the prince was not wearing an airbag.
The pictures of the mangled ABS and avalung are from the Telluride, CO accident.
Like robrox says, they aren't a talisman.
But everyone skiing in avvy terrain should learn how to use them, and wear them.
And then think about getting a beacon to supplement their recco. _________________ I refuse to engage in a battle of wits with someone who is clearly unarmed. Target practice, on the other hand . . . |

If you look at the pictures of the Telluride slide - the nature of the terrain likely dictated neither the avalung or airbag would have helped... steep, extremely tight tree choked gully. _________________ Try "mid-fats" , you may like them! |

And a thousand foot (in vertical) ride.
But then at Stevens Pass, I think the ride was just as long if not longer, steep, with lots of objects (media report indicates at least one of the three dead might be from trauma), and the one with airbag walked away.
Either way, definitely not a talisman. _________________ I refuse to engage in a battle of wits with someone who is clearly unarmed. Target practice, on the other hand . . . |

Yep, no such thing. Wits, experience, and luck. That's all we have really. The rest is just dressing. _________________ "Throw you in the pigpen, and you come out vice president of the hogs." Burt Lancaster |

Avalung My Friend | Nice!
As a musical aside, SomeGood just a few minutes ago FB posted that he was just listening to Dark Side of the Moon on an 8-Track...I think he has that bad boy mounted up in his Grooming Machine at Wentworth _________________ "Moderate is not the new Low" - Chris Joosen, USFS Lead Snow Ranger (Tuckerman Ravine, White Mountains National Forest) |
