Ok guys you piqued my interest- it's out of print but I bought a used copy on Amazon for 4 bucks. Not exactly Master and Margarita, but a fun 70s cosmic sex romp a la Tom Robbins. I mean, why not? _________________ Reluctant enthusiast, part-time crusader, half-hearted fanatic |

Wow, almost all my favorite books are there, except "War & Peace" by Tolstoy (too long, though) and this one:
"Sailing Around the World Alone," by Capt. Joshua Slocum.
Slocum was the first to do this--which is cool.
Slocum's style is refreshingly homespun and still contemporary--sort of--which is also cool.
Slocum made up stuff to make the book more interesting--which is not surprising, considering that much of the time on a solo voyage is very boring.
Slocum disappeared at sea while trying to make one more voyage alone--which is the way to go if you're a crusty old skipper who never liked them new-fangled steamships.
I'm also a big fan of "Master and Margarita," and "Man's Fate," but nobody mentioned Ol' Josh. So that's my contribution.

yup, good yarn.
still though my fave novel remains Auto da Fé. i know it's not terribly original to spotlight that book --- like M&M, it's on a lot of best-of lists -- but so it goes. _________________ "Now is not the time for sound-bites" - David Cameron

I like Kerouac as much as the next red blooded american male. But have you ever noticed that all the women (except for his aunt, who bankrolls his adventures) in his books are stupid sluts while all the men are the most interesting man in the world? _________________ that sounds like a sure-fire way to get bitch-slapped by devil's club -- dschane |

+1.
I wouldn't say this is the ONE book to own but I just finished reading it and was suprised by how well it was written. Slocum's sprightly style is a delight to read and makes for a real page turner. Considering that he didn't even make it to high school it's even more amazing. A must read for anyone even remotely interested in sailing. _________________ Telemarking in a parallel universe. |

That's not true. Kerouac was completely and totally in love with Carolyn Cassady, Neil's second wife. Carolyn was Camille in On the Road and appeared in other novels. _________________ Home Is Where Your Skis Is |

Glad you enjoyed it! Ah, yes "The universe is a big place, perhaps the biggest..."
This topic inspired me to order Master & Marg, though it'll probably take a while to get to it. And elsewhere, Baaahb convinced me to order the Keith Richards "Life" audiobook.
Re Dharma Bums: Underwhelmed.
I've already made my One recommendation, so feel free to ignore The User Illusion: Cool, profound, thought-provoking. |

The User Illusion is a good read, he does a nice job connecting his hypothesis.
If you liked that, check out The Complementary Nature, Kelso & Engstrom. A little math heavy, but an interesting topic.
For even more physiological based "illusion" check out The Brain's Sense of Movement, Alain Berthoz. |
