I agree...

Only a few times in my CAIC days did I do any "Belayed Snowpit" work.

Don't worry about safe zones, make sure that you have a safe word.

You're think'n safety with current issues...what it's all about!

Now, just put some line in your pack and know you will use it sooner than your beacon and quit fretting. Wink At the least you'll sit on a warmer, line, lined lunch seat next lunch break.

Alison Wonderland?

OP- Are you saying we should rope up for the 20 seconds we stop at each spot as we descend? Seems like the time it would take to rope up & off is equal to more than the time I would spend there unroped. But I hope your meaning has not been lost or misconstrued?

There is nothing wrong with using anchors per se. But I agree with Hacksaw and Christian that the stated objective of using one on a tree in an island of safety means there is something wrong with your evaluation of what is an island of safety. Just because it's a tree... even a big, old growth specimen, doesn't mean it is a safe location from avalanche. And the idea that you would want to have additional protection or insurance underscores their point. If it is truly an island of safety, and not just relatively and marginally less dangerous, you shouldn't need it. If you need it, it's not an island of safety.

Alice's Restaurant, group W bench per granpa's location; either it is familiar or not based on age

I'm not promoting anything; consider it or ignore it; just thinking outside the box after all these years; for me personally, in a year like this, with my comfort level with ropes, I can flash a quick extra bit of insurance and pull it back just as quick; I like it; I'm going to start doing it

If you where in British Columbia (they have all the snow), and stood close enough to "anchor off to it" you'd fall into the treewell around the tree.... Wink

Yup. Tree wells. Don't like em. Not one bit.

Next chance I get my plan is to experiment with tossing a line down hill from upside a tree, crank a 180 around the tree come to a halt downside tree where my tossed line lies

I have no intention of hugging a tree; all that accomplishes is 1. Treewell risk and 2. Coat myself in sap

Whole maneuver should happen without me even getting close to tree

Cranking around tree to halt facing partners. Doin that anyway.

No offense to tree huggers intended.

After the fine work you did in the field of nested quotes we look forward to following developments in island hopping with anchors.
