Mobileme, photo gallery is going away with icloud... (yeah i know Apple Rolling Eyes ) apparently hosting isn't going to be their 'bag' anymore. Thanks alot Apple! I did like their gallery but i didn't love it so...

Anyone try Phanfare? It's $29 a year for their basic package.

I have played with Flickr, Shutterfly and other sites. I am on +google but haven't really played with it much yet.

Is Phanfare worth it? Or are one of the 'free' hosting sites just as good for basic photo hosting?

I use smugmug, I think it costs $40/yr but I really like it. Lots of customizing ability, great support. If it interests you, I can give you a referral that will save you I think $5 for the first year.

I'll check that out and pm you Danno. Thanks a bunch.

I've been wanting to find a good photo-hosting site as well. I checked out smugmug and it looks pretty good, and the price is reasonable.

I want to be able to send selected people links to a particular gallery, without them being able to access other galleries. It appears that is probably doable on smugmug (text paste below), but are you able to confirm that, Danno? Thanks.

Also, I do want people to be able to order prints off the site at a reasonable price and quality. The price list looks reasonable. Any experience with the quality of prints and ease of ordering, Danno?

Thanks again.

Brent, I have played around with "private galleries" a little and it seems to work. I made one gallery private and I can still view it when logged out if I have the link. But I think you also need to make the entire site private, because otherwise they can go back up the chain and see your non-private galleries. But if everything is private, they will only be able to see stuff for the links you give them.

As for printing, I have printed a bunch, mostly 4x6s, and it is super easy, affordable (just like 20 cents a print and $3 shipping), and the prints seem good quality, and it's very easy to do (can even do some cropping and stuff). You can also allow people to download full size files, or you can disable that.

http://razzi.me/ is getting mentioned more frequently...the guy behind it used to get many flickr hits, and eventually realized that in the social media era it makes more sense for the hosting site to pay you for providing content, rather than you paying them for server space.

i haven't transferred over to it yet. i don't think it provides for printing.

Backcountry Agenda is free and Websense thinks it is not a photo host; typically all photos display for cube-farm users. http://www.whps-technology.org/backcountry/smf/index.php

That's the thing. I'd rather pay a bit and be able to control access and maintain privacy. As they say of Facebook, you, the user, are not the customer; you are the commodity. No thanks.

I want to be able to share my photos and let family and friends print if they want from the particular galleries I've chosen to share with those individuals, but I don't want everyone to have access to everything.

Thanks, Danno. From looking around the smugmug site and hearing your feedback, I'll probably sign up. It was too daunting to try to investigate and evaluate all the sites out there from scratch, so the recommendation is helpful.

There's gotta be an angle, either ads, or otherwise pimping your content. I'd rather pay $40/year for a clean layout that offers privacy.

? That razzi site allows you to completely control access. You could make it invisible to everyone if you wanted.

The business model is voluntary revenue sharing i.e. sites like that are banking on the fact that a certain portion of users will be interested in a very public account so that they can revenue share with the site via Google AdSense. Users like that are essentially subsidizing users who keeping things private.

Been pretty happy with Flickr at $25 or so per year. Pretty good privacy controls if desired. Easy to pull the image link for posting on sites like this. Retains pretty high quality to share with friends for downloading and printing. You can control who sees what.

It's been like six years w/o ads. The cheif bottle washer is an educator with a penchant for the bc in all seasons..it's a passion. There is a board with it. There are quite a few folks of excellent repute representing our various niche-preferences.

Take a look...nice group, no ads.

Privacy? That's a fair point. I think there are some rudimentary gallery settings, but I should think the fee based sites would do at least as well but probably do much better in that regard.

Another vote here for Razzi. I like a few tiny bits of Google's Picasa, I like almost none of Flickr's user interface. If you decide to move your stuff from Flickr to Razzi, there's a feature for that. Even the free accounts allow unlimited uploads and revenue sharing.

As Nils pointed out, there are full privacy controls.

If you're looking to get exposure to other photogs, potential clients or people, look elsewhere, there aren't a ton of people using Razzi.

On a different note, I recently started using Panoramio. There is a bit of old world internet about it, just like there is for every google-based iPhone app. If it were a person, it would be a old, grunting and incontinent oaf good at doing one thing on a good day.

Ack, way too geeky for me...complications

I have a shutterfly account, nice and FREE! However, I don't seem to be able to link pictures onto this web site from there (?) Am I doing something wrong?

If not, anyone know of a FREE hosting site? I was using fileave.com for a while, but it goes dead pretty quick when you don't use it. I don't care about privacy, etc. as long as it's free.
