Heard about it. No new news yet from King5 and all the other abc channels.

For thise not familiar with the drainage, it was OB off the back of Cowboy Mtn heading down to the bend on Rte 2. A very popular and easily accessible area. About 19" of new heavy snow in the last day or so. Sorry for friends and family but it seems like poor decision making might have lead to this tragedy.

Weather Channel reported on it a few hours ago. Possibly 2 dead, 8 missing. More sad news for this season.

http://www.powdermag.com/stevens_pass-news/three-dead-in-stevens-pass-avalanche/

I skipped today because of a dog injury, but am somewhat glad I avoided the crowds, which sound gigantic this holiday Sunday. My observations from yesterday....

Very heavy, very sensitive cohesive new storm snow on dust over rain crust.

A tough human factor was the lines, and they weren't even bad yesterday because of this storm coming in bigger than expected. But even so, I would've been tempted to go sidecountry if the gates were open to lose the crowds. On a weekday, it wouldn't have even crossed my mind.

Yesterday we had great skiing with 7 inches of good powder over an icy crust near White Pass WA. We kept to the trees and lower angles because of the conditions. Later in the day we kicked off a slope that went wall to wall to the bottom. We commented that the holidays, new snow and a lack of good skiing for the last month were a perfect combination for someone to die this weekend. My partner was concerned enough that he contacted the White Pass Ski Patrol to inform them of the conditions that we encountered. I feel so bad for the friends and loved ones of those involved.

I didn't know him well but have skied with one of the fatalities at Steven's and he is one of the nicest people ever. He is a legend and will be missed.

I don't know where the Alpental fatality took place, but as I was leaving earlier today, around 1 PM, about half dozen rescue vehicles were on the access road. There was a group of three or four people up on a very steep face, maybe 500 meters above the road. appeared to be performing a rescue, group of boarders were down talking with King county rescue, patrol, etc. this may be related to the one person who died today at Alpental. was surprised to see the group on such an exposed, steep face, esp after receiving so much snow the past two days.

the Armstrong lift experienced a delayed opening this morn, I waited in line over an hour and was queued at 8:15, by 9:15 the line was HUGE. don't think i've ever seen a lift line so long. with the upper chair not opening until late morning it stayed that way for a few hours. can't help but wonder if this played a factor in the group deciding to go BC. people were so amped up to ride powder, esp after sat being a great day, and when the lifts/mtn didn't cooperate today it may have been tempting enough to venture out. a few patrol were near the front of the lift line this morning advising people to take extra precaution.

thoughts and prayers out to families and friends.
