Ah yes my favourite technique. Light tap on the brakes to get the car heavier in the front, and unload the rear, on the gas, tail out, through the corner all four wheels clawing for grip. |
Man... as much hell as my old Audio 4000Q gave me... it was the most predictable vehicle with this technique. Significantly more so than our '97 Outback.
Fun. |
Saab 92x Aero here - basically a Subaru WRX. Very predictable driven this way. I remember the 4000Q my buddy had. He was showing us the great power roof etc. Everything was open and down and the windows/roof failed. It then started to pour and pour _________________ Larry

co worker of mine husband got in a car crash in a Wrangler. She was impressed by the lack of safety features and how mangled the passenger compartment was in a low speed crash.

Mine had rear windows that would require a chicken sacrifice to get them to roll up. I put guards over the rear switches in a sad attempt to keep them up.

Mary, I hope we've been a big help with your search for the perfect ski town car. Asking tele skiers for advice on an automotive fashion statement almost ALWAY spirals into mayhem, and we usually love every minute of it. I get the feeling that you'll end up with some form of a Hummer, and on Valentines Day that is exactly what many of us will end up with too!!! _________________ Those voices in your head are not real, but they have some really great ideas! |

My Ford Escape has 200,000 miles on it, going strong and hasn't gotten stuck in a spot where I didn't deserve to be stuck (aka: pushed my luck busting through snow banks) _________________ "Those who look outward dream; those who look inward awaken..." - Carl Jung

The responsible way to purchase a new or used vehicle is to find the smallest and most fuel efficient vehicle that meets your needs.
Anything less is as ethically reprehensible as book burning.
Throw on some Blizzaks or equivalent and you're good to go. _________________ DUCKBILLS FOREVER!

Since we seem to have moved away from what Mary wants to what we have enjoyed in the past, I will throw in my two bobs worth.
Audi Quattro S4 wagon 4.2 litre V8 0-100 in around 5.6 seconds and a set of Pirelli' winter tyres rated for 240km/hr on 19 inch rims. Admittedly, not great ground clearance, it would get high centred on a cobblestone road, but great for sitting at 220km/hr as you head to Austria. A secondary benefit was that it had a great exhaust note above 5,000 rpm. |

Thanks to all for the input and opinions. As it turned out I was in Mammoth last week during a small storm driving my Ford Explorer 2WD and it was enough to convince me that 4WD or AWD is the way to go up there. Chain control being a major issue. GOC was right too about the Cayenne, I saw a seriously botoxed Beverly Hills Housewife pull up in one at the Vons and had a good laugh. As for the Hummer, a male friend had to explain the joke. I guess I was married too long to keep up with current vernacular.
I test drove a lightly used Toyota Highlander Hybrid Limited 4WD last weekend and was surprised this car didn't come up in this thread as it seems to meet a lot of criteria, yours and mine. It was a great car but I'm not sure it's really what I'm looking for. I like the FJ a lot, it's me, but I'm still concerned about backseat access for a car seat and such. Anyone?
Just for fun and for the guy who said I wasn't for real, here's a picture from last week.
Thanks again to all.
Mary B.

.................................................................. binding alert!
I find the "AWD" systems work as well on snowy roads
as full-time true 4WD (or true locked differential 4WD).
"4WD" at this point largely translates into "4-Lo".
Also, I have learned, carrying the skis in the vehicle beats a roof
mount - what come out, goes back in ... and is not left behind ...
say at Copper Mountain ...
