Bonsoir
Being new to the sport, I am a medium level telemark skier. I am going to steamboat colorado in couple of weeks for three days skiing and will bring my telemark gear.
Any tips or advice on the montain or area?
May consider taking a course to refresh my skills. Any recommendations?
thanks |

Snow condition dependent of course, but assuming the snow is not sunbaked in the open, I would suggest starting out the day by taking the Gondola and working your way over to the Sunshine Express area to warm up. Tons of cruisy runs and mellow trees mixed between. If you want more challege, just work your way skiers right along the mtn. The trees near Sundown lift are great for improving your skills if that is your thing. There is some fun skiing under the Storm Peak and Pony Express chairs that although black diamond, is often on the more moderate side of the scale.
I would avoid the lower mtn from the Gondola to the main base. There are some decent runs but you are funneled into the masses.
Morningside Park on the back side provides access to the harder terrain on the front side, and although there is a number of moderate runs down to that lift, they mostly consist of a short drop followed by a long flat. Better areas to be unless you are accessing the chutes on the front side IMO.
I am sure some locals can provide better, and possibly contradicting, info. Have fun - Steamboat is one of my favorite places to ski. |

solid suggestions so far. here's a few more for you ...
1) cruisers - knock out some early AM laps on vagabound (via the thunderhead chair). up higher lap rainbow via the storm peak express.
2) bumps - upper twister (via the storm peak express) to the 3rd cat track then traverse to hurricane or whiteout.
3) trees - closet or shadows (via the storm peak express) or twighlight off sunshine peak express.
4) steeper shots - the chutes or no names / north saint pats / east face (via morningside)
5) apres - the tbar ... take right-0-way (below the thunderhead express) towards the base. it'll be on the right before slopeside. grab a beer, order a sandwich and enjoy.
have a great trip - hope we have more terrain open by the time you arrive. |
