VT,
I am pretty sure that face has seen human powered tracks on it. I saw some tracks last year in this approx. location.
I don't think they came from the summit though. The group had skied up DOT ridge, off "Loveland" summit, then over the top of "Tones Temple" (I know it has another name), then across the glacier flats below the "Sapphire" and ended skiing down this face.
Ahhhhh for the long days of March/April. |

I'm pretty sure those were heliski tracks...so that means nothing, at least to me. That was tracked at first light one am. Impressive ski tracks though. HAppened right as the heli's showed up in mid- March. I heard it was a two HSG guides. and I only saw two sets of tracks......but could be very wrong. If it was human powered, my hats off. I have climbed the face of Tones and its a bear. North face of Tones is simply the best thing I dream if. Already did the south face with BradA. Tones yesterday looked sweet as a number of avalanches have cleaned it out the hazards. Could've booted it easy.
Would like to get around that bend after climbing up and cross the top of 27 mile Glacier to get at Sapphire again , but I always get distracted by Catchers Mitts. Its a tough problem...south facing, 35-38, high consequences type of thing, especially solo. I measured the travers across that hump at 33. Gosh if you could get in that seraced summit ridge it would be stupendous.
Anyway,,,,,more snow they say. House shook good from a tremor this am. Pots and pans swinging..felt like a truck hit the house. |

Nope no heli tracks it was DL and a friend of his, human powered. We followed their ascent track up then skied off "Loveland" peak. We could see their boot pack up to "Tones Temple". Talked to him later and he said it was epic.
In the big scheme of things it really doesn't matter if it has been done, it is still a great slope. |

That's understandable since DL probably has been staring at that line out his window for the past few years from his lofty perch. Pretty sure that's his view out his window. .
To bad we can't get some type of record of ski ascents/descents put together. I have been keeping tabs and will record DL's trip. Did they summit Tones, just for clarification?
Oh well.....I guess I'll have to move. Its all been done, nothing left......... |

My understanding from my conversation with DL was that they ascended DOT ridge and summited "Loveland" first, skiing off of the summit.
Then they crossed the DOT glacier and booted up to the summit of "Tones", skiing off of it toward the "Saphire".
Then they crossed "27-mile Glacier" and descended the line in the photo.
We saw them skiing the "Brad's Peak" line as we were ascending the up track to "Loveland" summit. Their boot-pack up "Tones" was obvious.
...yep VT better hang it up there are no new lines to be had |

I went up there a couple of times last year, did the spine in the middle of the pic over to the chute on the front, "Cauliflower" I was told was the name of the chute. Someone had done it a few days before me also.
Tell him, Mir |

Huh????
I take a look at some of the lines that were skied in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s in the Alps and I don’t understand what you mean by that!? For something a little closer to your home think about the Hourglass Couloir off Denali being skied by Sylvain Saudan in ’72 (and then renamed the Saudan couloir or more recently the Messner Couloir). Then think about what kind of boots and skis we were on in the very early 70’s.
82! We were in rear entry boots, swank new AT bindings and fat skis had already come, gone and were making a slight comeback by then.

Good morning and Merry Christmas from Tabitha and I, nestled deep in the Chugach and a most blustery winter day. No ski today, but by golly we got snowshoes for Chrsitmas will be out wandering under the protection of our forest. Imagine Tabitha a life long Alaskan and me here for almost too long, finally got snowshoes.
12-25/9:30am/ 15F/Clear/ENE25G55........brrrr..........
