Given that Whistler Blackcomb is expected to open Thursday or Friday of next week, I thought it might be time to start whining about how much the area sucks.

We woke up to snow into the valley yesterday and thought we should break out the franken-ramer-trekker's for the kids and spent our first days earning the turns in preparation for the 'real' season of suckage ahead.

Snowing in the valley a good sign - time to head to the car:

We were impressed how quickly the kids caught on and off we went - 3 km up:

Passing below the exit of Ponderosa or RDS, depending on which season, bike or ski:

We found a nice pitch about 1/2 way up our intended route - great for a pre-lunch rip - wound up building a jump and hitting three laps.

Nico's first turns of the season:

Maya like she never stopped for summer:

Post lunch prep to keep going up up up for a long run home - were were hoping to get as much as 2000' for the home run:

Kids couldn't make the last pitch so Mrs. WH and I took a turn on it while the kids built another jump. Solo skin track = solo powder:

Last climbing pitch for the kids after a rest - learning how to switchback up:

They learn the power of going where no one else is - personal pow:

Mrs. WH crossing the skin-track:

Happy additions to the ski-drying rack!

As much as Whistler does suck, you, sir, are doing some very fine work.

Hats off.

Thanks CSG and Hoser... but if they didn't have smiles on, we were ready to turn back. Fortunately with treats, encouragement, and their love of the outdoors, all was good.

Underage suckage. Forcing children to use frankenramertrekkers....This borders on child abuse! Smile

Rebob beat me to it, but it's on - that kills the planned Saturday night dinner party!

If this doesn't scream gong show for opening weekend, I don't know what does. A dump of snow to finish the week, then clearing skies for opening weekend! Rolling Eyes

Quote:
Synopsis
Periods of snow will continue tonight, along with gusty winds in the alpine areas. An additional 15-25 cm of snow is expected overnight.

Snow will decrease and become more intermittent tomorrow morning with just a snow flurry or two during the afternoon hours. An additional 4-8 cm is expected.

Just a few snow flurries are expected on Thursday with mostly cloudy skies but dry conditions on Friday. Temperatures will be getting chilly however. Saturday will see clearing skies and cold temperatures with a few snow flurries on Sunday.

The kids are stoked to use thier touring rigs instead to get up for some turns and build some jumps away from the masses. Smile

Pretty fun this weekend on good early season snow.

Gettin' warmed up on Dad's:

Maya getting used to the speed of the piste after two touring days on her new touring setup:

Over to Franz's Meadow to enjoy the rocks before they are covered:

Lots of good snow out there and everyone was over on Emerald leaving us alone:

Hiking over to the t-bars was well worth the time; so much, that the kids wanted to do 2 laps, even with the walking:

Clearly he loved the results of a little extra work:

She was chargin:

Time to head home; we were able to ski right to Creekside - too bad the rain will wipe the lower mountain this week:

Rainbow was calling for a tour this year:

Pretty fun video opening day from Whistler - no WROD openings: http://vimeo.com/32370570

We've all heard of touring for turns. The kids have become enamoured with touring for jumps!

Awesome WH..makes me reminisce about skiing with my neice and nephew as they grew up in Whistler, with us taking a few trips over every year. In hindsight it seems like a few (too few) seasons that we skiied together before their abilities outgrew us oldies...enjoy! (can still outride them on the MB however, ha!)

Exceptional skiing Friday followed by more exceptional skiing Saturday until about 2:30 when things got really wet and blowy. Gave today a skip. Got some fun shots coming soon.

And for those that can play hooky, Wednesday might be great. The few days of sun forecast might be nice to be able to let things settle themselves out a bit after the snow and winds!

Quote:
Synopsis
Heaviest snow moves east and snow showers end this evening. Blustery west winds will die down overnight as cool air moves into the area. The upper elevations should be mostly clear by sunrise. .

Dry conditions are expected Monday. Should be a beautiful day with low clouds down below in the valleys and bright sun early morning. Higher clouds thicken up in the afternoon and there is a chance of snowflakes late in the day.

Look for cloudy skies Monday night with a light snow developing in the late night hours. Light snow is expected Tuesday, with sunny and dry conditions expected Wednesday and Thursday.

Tonight
Partly cloudy. Chance of light snow late.
Freezing level: 900 m
High: . Low: -8. Winds: W 20 kph going to light Accumulations: 0-1 cm

Monday
Cloudy. Light snow.
Freezing level: 1300 m
High: -4. Low: . Winds: E 15-30 kph Accumulations: 5-10 cm

Tuesday
